Show me, tell me questions
You’ll be asked one “tell me” question before you start driving, and one “show me” question while you’re driving.
Tell me questions
Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Test them as you set off. The car should not pull to one side.
Tell me where you’d find the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how they should be checked.
Manufacturer’s guide. Use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget the spare, and refit the valve caps.
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted to give the best protection in a crash.
The rigid part of the head restraint should be at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Some restraints might not be adjustable.
Tell me how you’d check the tyres have enough tread depth and are safe to use on the road.
No cuts or bulges, and 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around its entire circumference.
Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
Operate the switch (turn on the ignition if needed), then walk round the car. You don’t need to get out.
Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
A warning light comes on if there’s a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working.
Operate the switch (turn on the ignition if needed), then walk round the car. You don’t need to get out.
Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on this car.
Operate the brake pedal and use reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.
Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working. Keep gentle pressure on the wheel while starting the engine and you should feel a slight movement, or turn the wheel just after moving off.
Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and when you’d use them.
Operate the switch (with dipped headlights and ignition on if needed), check the warning light is on, and explain when you’d use them.
Tell me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and how you’d know main beam is on.
Operate the switch (with ignition or engine on if needed) and check the main beam warning light.
Tell me open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check the engine has enough oil.
Find the dipstick or oil level indicator and describe checking the level against the minimum and maximum marks.
Tell me open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check the engine has enough coolant.
Find the high and low marks on the header tank or radiator filler cap and describe how to top up to the right level.
Tell me open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check you have a safe level of brake fluid.
Find the reservoir and check the level against the high and low marks.
