Become a driving instructor

Start a new career and train to become a driving instructor (PDI training) with OOOSH!

Who can apply

To become a driving instructor you apply to the DVSA. To be entered on the register, you need to:

  • hold a full UK or EU/EEA unrestricted car driving licence
  • have held it for at least four of the past six years before qualifying
  • not have been disqualified from driving in the four years before joining the register
  • be a “fit and proper” person; all convictions are taken into account
  • pass an enhanced criminal record check

The three tests

  1. Part 1: theory and hazard perception.
  2. Part 2: your driving ability. After passing, train for 40 hours to be eligible for a trainee licence, then work and study with learner drivers. You’ll need another 20 hours of training while on your trainee badge.
  3. Part 3: your teaching ability. Taken within 6 months. You have 3 attempts.

Training prices

Part 1: classroom training£35 an hour
Part 2: in-car training£45 an hour
Part 3: in-car training£45 an hour

You need at least 40 hours to gain a trainee licence, which is valid for 6 months. Fast track training is available. Once qualified, you can join OOOSH! for £55 a week with local work supplied.

Already had training? You’ll need an assessment with one of our trainers before joining. We also advise buying training material from the Stationery Office (Safe Driving for Life), Grade Six Supplies or Amazon.
